Max Homa gets first PGA Tour win at 2019 Wells Fargo Championship in convincing fashion.
Max Homa picked up his first PGA TOUR victory at this weekend's Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club. Homa, who was making his 69th career TOUR start, shot a final-round 67 to finish at 15-under par and win by three strokes over runner-up Joel Dahman (-12).
Justin Rose (-11) shot a final-round 68 to finish 3rd.
For Homa, the victory must have been a sweet one for a player who had never even had a Top-5 finish on the TOUR (best previous finish was a tie for 6th at the 2015 Sony Open) and who entered the weekend ranked 417th in the Official World Golf Rankings. His 15-under final total was tied for the 3rd-best 72-hole score at this event.
Although Dahman shot a 1-under 70 on Sunday, he was no match for Homa. Dahman did match his best finish on the TOUR, having also finished 2nd (tied) at the 2018 John Deere Classic.
As for Rose, his final-round 68 moved him into the Top 5 for the 3rd straight trip to Quail Hollow. He was a 5th-place finisher here in 2014 and in 2016 he also finished 3rd.
Some other notable players:
Jason Dufner began the day tied with Homa and Dahman for the 54-hole lead, but could never get into serious contention, finishing with a 2-over 73. He finished the tournament tied for 4th at -9.
Rory McElroy, the only 2-time winner of this event (2010, 2015) could never get it going to finished with a 2-over 73 to end up tied for 8th place at 7-under. His fate was pretty much sealed with a bogey at No. 9 and a double bogey at No. 10.
Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler both shot 68 on Sunday to each finish in a tie for 4th at -9. For Garcia, the 4th-place finish was impressive when you consider he was even par after the 2nd round, but shot a 65 on Saturday and 68 on Sunday to earn his top-5 finish.
After next year's Wells Fargo Championship, all eyes will be focused on the Quail Hollow Course in the fall of 2021, when it hosts the Presidents Cup.
