NBA DRAFT UPDATE: Hornets finish second round with improvements to both ends of the court

The Charlotte Hornets used the first of their two picks in the second round of the NBA draft to add defensive toughness to their arsenal. The team selected Cody Martin from Nevada with the thirty-sixth overall pick - a selection that originally belonged to the Washington Wizards.

While Martin adds more defensive firepower for the Hornets, the 6-7 Forward's efforts can, at times, be less disciplined than needed.

His shooting has just started to develop as well as his ability to take care of the basketball - adding to the Hornets' draft night list of selctees with a need to develop their long-range attacks.

Martin, who spent two season at NC State with twin brother Caleb before transferring to Nevada, averaged 9.7 points, shooting .501 from the field.

The Hornets used the fifty-second pick to grab PF Jalen McDaniels of San Diego State University. Just as the Hornets first round pick PJ Washington, McDaniels tested the NBA draft waters in 2018 but stayed for a second season where he became the leading scorer for the Aztecs. On offense, McDaniel is an efficient scorer with the ability to shoot off the dribble.

The biggest area for improvement for McDaniels will be on the defensive end. While he has length and quickness, he has not put in the same effort to use it to block out and rebound.

The next challenge for the Hornets will be to resolve the Kemba Walker situation beginning June 30th when the free agency period begins.
